Burgundy: A Comprehensive Guide to the Producers, Appellations, and Wines
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2000-06-27 Summary: In Defense of Parker ... I have several excellent books on Burgundy, but this is the one that I refer to most frequently. Parker is the most influential wine critic in the world and as such has become the worlds most criticized wine critic, especially as to his 100 - point rating scale. For example, both Clive Coates in his book Cote d'Or and Anthony Hanson in his book Burgundy, both of which I highly recommend, are very critical of Parker's 100 point rating system. Some feel that wine is like music or art and should not be rated numerically ...more

Wines of Burgundy (Mitchell Beazley Wine Guides)
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-06-26 Summary: A good overview ... This book gives a good, but.... quite "general" (and sometimes a tad sketchy) overview of wines from Burgundy. I recommend it a sort of "pocket" reference book. I would certainly take it along with me on a visit to Burgundy but it would NOT be helpful in planning an "in depth" tour of Burgundy before hand. ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2000-06-12 Summary: Superb, concise introduction to Burgundy wines ... Although Coates' "The Cote d'Or" is the indispensable (and massive) reference for Burgundy wines, Sutcliffe's pocket-size book is an excellent introduction to the subject. I'm impressed at the author's ability to be both concise and comprehensive, as well as to make her very definite opinions known. I especially appreciate her introduction to the concept of "terroir", and her descriptions of the soil in each village and appellation -- critical to understanding the character of Burgundy wine. I received my copy of this ...more

Serena Sutcliffe is equal to any in her knowledge of Burgundy and you can not go wrong following her advice. Make sure you get the 2005 edition as it has the latest vintage notes. ...more

Burgundy to Champagne: The Wine Trade in Early Modern France (The Johns Hopkins University Studies in Historical and Political Science)
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | "The history of wine in France," writes historian Thomas Brennan, "cannot be understood without the wine trade." Perhaps more than any other members of rural society, the wine growers of early modern France depended on markets. Those who controlled these markets, whether through enterprise, wealth, influence, or simple ruthlessness, could gain enormous power. This is the story of the provincial brokers who gained such power, rising in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century...more

[2] ... Review | Several years ago, an article in Wine Spectator magazine noted the importance of a high-quality glass for improving a wine's looks and enhancing its bouquet. However, the magazine lamented, many of the attributes that increase the beauty and value of the glass actually obscure the wine. Tap the glass gently with your fingernail...more
